If one were to define the meeting between Emmanuelle Huynh and Erwan Keravec in three words, these would be: enfant, bolero, Japan. Emmanuelle saw Erwan perform in Boris Charmatz’ choreography Enfant; Erwan saw Emmanuelle dance in Odile Duboc’s choreography of Ravel’s Bolero; and their first exchanges were related to Japan, what with Emmanuelle performing Spiel with Akira Kasai and Erwan playing Inori by Susumu Yoshida. However, this may be a false lead to understand what takes place here. The word that characterises their duo is improvisation. When improvising, individuals reveal themselves –at times stepping aside, at times asserting themselves. What one does compels the other one to take a stance. A bit like politics –yet with no set place for each player, no predifined roles: just a space to define together, here and now.
